Our Bhaisajyaguru statue/Medicine Buddha statue sits in full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal. He also has all the markings of a Buddha including ushnisha topknot, elongated ears, three neck lines and right turning hair curls. Additionally, with his right hand he is depicting the Varada “gift giving” mudra. This mudra is expressed with the hand draped over the right knee and the palm facing outward. As a result, he is telling devotees that he has granted them the gift of medicine. Between the thumb and index finger of the same hand he holds the sprig of the myrobalan plant. The myrobalan plant is an ancient herbal remedy used in India.

The second mudra depicted by our Bhaisajyaguru statue is the Dhyana “meditation” mudra. He also holds the lapis medicine bowl in the flat palm of the hand. Inside the bowl are the three nectars that cure the three poisons of greed, hatred and ignorance. However, these remedies only work through diligent practice following the teachings of the Buddha. Indeed, Buddhists believe that bad karma is the root cause of all disease. Therefore, a virtuous lifestyle following the Dharma path will cure any ailment.
